for extorting money from him and three other men on pretense of licensing them to retail liquor. As noted above, Pierre was a signatory to the act of 1696, naturalizing him and securing his property. Pierre died 25 Oct 1699 in Charles Town.
3 - Peter Poinsett - 762 (
1700), son of Pierre and Sarah, married Anne Gobard - 766
and emigrated to SC with his father, Pierre. They had a son, Joel, born in SC. Peter is listed as a coppersmith in 1696 on the Santee River, in the Register of the Province, 1696 and 1703 (S.C. Archives, Columbia, SC, p. 143). Pierre Jr. signed the naturalization and land securing
act of 1696.
4 - Joel Poinsett - 770 (1690 - 1744), son of Peter and Anne, married Susannah Varin - 771
1729), daughter of Susannah and Jacques Varin, grand-daughter of Samuel and
Jeanne Dubois Horry of Neufchatel. He was a weaver 1703-1710, vintner, tavern keeper on Elliot Street 1732-1744 (the house still stands at no. 28 Elliot and is known as Poinsett Tavern), and planter 1790. Joel was a signer of the 1731 petition sent from the Charles Town congregation to the London Waloon Church seeking a French Huguenot Minister; a salary of 280 was offered and an additional 225 for passage (Hirsch, 1928). Joel is listed in the 1741 census of Charles Town, Charleston Co. He is buried in the churchyard of the French Huguenot Church in Charleston. His will, dated 26 Jan 1743, mentions son Peter, son-in-law Edward Richardson (husband of Elizabeth), son-in-law Isaac Holmes (married to Susannah), daughter Mary DuPre, and son Elisha.
5 - Elisha Poinsett - 773 (1711 - 1771), son of Joel and Susannah, born in Charleston, married Catherine Harris - 780 (1715-1774) 23 Oct 1734, at Trinity Church, Newport, RI. Catherine was born 20 Apr 1715 in Newport and died in 1774 in Charleston. He signed the naturalization and land securing act of 1696. Elisha was a Mariner in Philadelphia, 1734; joined the South Carolina Society, 1743; Registrar at St. Phillips, Charleston, 1758-1770.
6 - John Poinsett - 790 (1735 - 1762), son of Elisha and Catherine, was christened 22 Feb 1735 in Trinity Church, Newport, RI. He married Mary Cattel - 796, widow of Peter Cattel, 1 May 1756 at St. Phillips, Charleston, SC.
5 - Peter Poinsett - 777 (1719 - 1757), son of Joel and Susannah, was christened at St. Thomas and St. Denis. He was a member of the South Carolina Society in 1739 and was constable of the society in 1742. A record in the LDS library states Peter, son of Joel Poinsett and Susannah Varin was born in 1707 in Charleston, SC. This conflicts with the 1719 date given by Oliveros (1980) and Crouse (1981).
