4 - Asa Poinsett - 17 (1866 - 1914) was the second child. He and his first wife, Helen Harris, had three children; I found no information on them; I am guessing that one of them was the Effie C. Poinsett, age 6, who is listed as living with August and Martha Poinsett at the time of the 1900 census.
By his second wife, Ella Herring, Asa had eight children. One of these, Rose, a twin of Asa Ephraim, died at birth in 1913. After Asa and Helen died, at Randles, MO, in 1914 and abt 1916, respectively, the three youngest children of this second family, Joseph Larkin (age 6), Asa Ephraim (age 3), and Theresa Maria (age 1), were taken in by Joseph Sylvester Poinsett - 21 after their parents died. When Asa Ephraim was 5 years old he went to live with Ann Theresa Poinsett - 24 (Aunt Tess). His son, Charles Warren Poinsett, relates that Asa Ephraim was put on a train in Cape Girardeau and sent to Bismark, MO, where he was met by Aunt Tess. He had all his things in a little brown suitcase which he still has today. He was reared by Aunt Tess. Asa Ephraim Poinsett's (1913 - 1992) children are: Jo Anne married Ben E. In the 1870 census the name is “Augustus” Ephraim Poinsett, as it is in early St. John's records. He was baptized in St. John's Church, Leopold, MO, 25 Aug 1867, by Rev. J. Bertens. Augustus seems to have adopted “August" as the spelling in later life. In his adult life he was known to his friends and family as “Gus”. When his mother
