The Braamhaar (Bramer) Family

The Braamhaars were from Holland, the Netherlands. The name is apparently derived from the two Dutch words “braam”, meaning bramble or bush, and “haar”, meaning hair; thus the first person to have this name supposedly had very bushy hair. They began using the name “Bramer” sometime after their arrival in America. The data are from St. John's Parish records, gravestones in the Leopold cemetery, Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, and the federal censuses of 1870 and 1880. “Bremer” is another variant sometimes seen. The Braamhaar family came to America in 1840. They settled in Leopold (then called Vinemount or Vinemont), Bollinger Co, MO, in 1860. At the time of their departure, the Netherlands was dominated by Protestants, although the Catholics had been emancipated under the then king, William III.
