Glossary

Authority to Operate (ATO) - Permission given by a Designated Approving Authority to operate a system; in a production environment.

Authorization The official management decision given by a senior organizational official to authorize operation of an information system and to explicitly accept the risk to organizational operations (including mission, functions, image, or reputation), organizational assets, individuals, other organizations, and the Nation based on the implementation of an agreed-upon set of security controls.

Authorizing Official — A senior (Federal) official or executive with the authority to formally assume responsibility for operating an information system at an acceptable level of risk to organizational operations (including mission, functions, image, or reputation), organizational assets, individuals, other organizations, and the Nation.

Availability - The timely and reliable access to and use of information and an information system.

Confidentiality - The restrictions on information access and disclosure, including the protection of personal privacy and proprietary information.

Configuration Management - A discipline applying technical and administrative direction and surveillance to identify and document the functional and physical characteristics of a configuration item, control changes to those characteristics, record and report change processing and implementation status, and verify compliance with specified requirements.
