ICAA5146A Develop website information architecture

Project 1 Stage 4:Develop architecture for website

This project requires learners to review requirements, investigate information architecture options and develop a prototype brochure site.

The table below provides comments to help in the facilitation process.

Project task

Check the communications page

This task allows the facilitator to direct learners to forums and communicate deadlines etc.

Develop requirements summary

Ideally learners should have a requirements report from Stages 2 and 3 of the project. If this is not the case, then the facilitator will need to provide the learner with a list of functional and non-functional requirements plus the opportunity statement.

A sample functional requirements document is available in wd_dwa_proj/projectpak/resources/sample_req.doc.

Write a design report

This task allows learners to investigate metaphors.

Learners may need to review the section in the resource pack on metaphors (the resource is called “information hierarchy”).

Learners are required to make a decision on what type of design metaphor they wish to use for the design of their website.

Learners are asked to write a brief report explaining their choice for the website metaphor. A discussion forum is suggested to encourage discussion on the use of metaphors. The facilitator will need to set up the forum and encourage participation.

Create a prototype of the website

It is advised that learners create a computer-based prototype of a brochure site. This assumes they have some skills in website development (eg from Certificate IV in Web Design). If this is not the case, you could consider a paper-based prototype at this stage.

NOTE: the learner is only being asked to prototype the navigation (menu) system at this stage.

Test prototype

Learners are required to develop an evaluation checklist in preparation for the testing of their prototype. The facilitator should consider pairing learners for the purposes of the usability test. The alternative is for the facilitator to test each learner’s prototype.
