In accordance with EIA regulations an environmental evaluation process was undertaken in the Platinum SDI.
Integration of Environmental Considerations into Decision Making
Besides compliance with EIA regulations, specific integration of environmental concerns into decision making is not clear
The proposed Sustainable Development Framework will include these mechanisms and will be part of marketing of the SDI’s in the province.
The Invest North West investment promotion strategy has no specific reference to environmental management concerns
Participation, Empowerment and Transparency
A broadly consultative process on the development of the SDI’s and the identification of potential development opportunities as well as more detailed studies of development projects has been undertaken.
Further consultation and involvement of all I&AP in future projects must be ensured
Environmental Justice and Equity
The SDI strategy is a government-private sector partnership with the primary objective of economic growth and development of the region.
One of the primary aims of the SDI is job creation
Ecological integrity has not specifically addressed in the studies.
The EIA regulations, if applied effectively, should ensure ecological integrity is maintained.
The proposed Sustainable Development Framework will recognise environmental opportunities and constraints in the province and identify sensitive areas.
The Economic Development and Infrastructure Cluster focus on the implementation of projects identified for the SDI’s led by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism and Invest North West. Environmental issues and concerns should be addressed here.
