BODY MECHANICS: TURNING A PATIENT FROM SIDE TO SIDE

1.

Washes hands and dons the appropriate PPE

2.

Explains the procedure to the patient

3.

Ensures that the bed brake is on

4.

Adjust the bed to working height (waist level)

5.

Lower the head of the bed until it is flat and removes the pillow

6.

Lowers side rail of bed and places the patient on their back and moves patient so that the side the patient is to lie on is close to the center of the bed

7.

Raises the side rail and moves to the other side of the bed

8.

Places the patient’s arms across chest and raises patient’s legs by flexing legs at the knees

9.

Standing on the bedside that the patient will be turned toward, places one hand on the knees and the other on the shoulder which will be up after the patient is turned

10.

Carefully turns patient on their side being sure that the downside arm does not fall under the patient

11.

Supports the patient’s back with pillows and places pillows between the patient’s legs to prevent pressure sores

12.

Adjusts that patient’s body alignment to ensure comfort and safety

13.

Removes PPE and washes hands using the appropriate hand-hygiene procedure

REMEMBER:

Maintain the proper alignment of your head and neck with your spine

Maintain the natural curve of your spine; don't bend at your waist

Avoid twisting your body when lifting or carrying a person
