MODULE 7.0 INFECTION CONTROL / EQUIPMENT CLEANING & STERILIZATION

General Objective:

Upon completion of the module, the student will demonstrate proper infection control procedures, including cleaning and sterilization procedures related to respiratory care.

Specific Objectives:

7.1Demonstrate and explain the importance of proper hand washing according to CDC guidelines

7.2Demonstrate proper donning and removal of personal protective equipment (PPE) according to CDC guidelines

7.3Adhere to infection control policies and procedure; e.g.,

Standard Precautions

Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquette

Contact precautions

Droplet precautions

Airborne precautions

7.4Describe and demonstrate the proper procedures for handling biohazardous waste, e.g.,

Contaminated PPE

Disposal of “SHARPS”

Removal of contaminated waste from a patient’s room

7.5Change respiratory equipment in use at the appropriate interval and/or as needed

7.6Properly disassemble and process contaminated respiratory equipment in designated decontamination areas

7.7Select the disinfection/sterilization method appropriate for each piece of equipment

7.8Package clean equipment for patient utilization in the designated area
