AARP Multicultural Survey July 2001
Specific Hopes and Fears
Despite their overall optimism, members of the sandwich generation remain somewhat worried about their economic prospects, retirement, and future health, even in the short-term. Table 9 relates the distribution of responses to an open-ended question about hopes for the next five years. These older boomers primarily look forward to economic improvement (40%), retirement or leisure (40%), and time and celebrations with their families (31%).
More specifically, respondents frequently mentioned desires for improved incomes, the possibility of retirement or working less, more leisure and travel, and watching their children grow up. Smaller proportions cited health or simply staying alive (16%).
