Program Description & Objectives
Dr. Charles D. Bluestone of the Children's Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, is one the world experts on the diagnosis and treatment of ear infections in children. He also helped to establish Pediatric Otolaryngology as a subspecialty. As our keynote speaker, he will present his theories on the pathogenesis of ear infections, and will offer practical advice on the treatment of pediatric otitis media.
A new faculty member at Columbia, Dr. Erik Waldman, will discuss the role of cochlear implantation in children with sensorineural hearing loss. Information on office testing of hearing disorders will be presented in a separate lecture.
The challenges of diagnosis and treatment of airway disorders and breathing problems will round out the conference. These will include a discussion of sleep-disordered breathing, and laryngeal problems which may present as asthma.
A period for questions will follow each lecture, and the focus of each talk is on practical information for diagnosis and treatment of common otolaryngology problems in children.
Special Conference Announcement
This program is being held in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Otolaryngology Update which is being organized by the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery of Columbia University. The course will be held October 16 & 17, 2008 at the New York Athletic Club and will allow participants to receive a concise, but comprehensive review of all aspects of the specialty in a single course.
