Chamber Review

January 2011

Serving The Central Pasco/Northern Hillsborough Areas Since 1975

From Your President

Gary Williams Bay Cities Bank

January 12, 2011

2010 is finishing up with some of the most political and economic happenings in some years. In business,we always want to look ahead, but we must take a peek back to see what we can do to minimize our mistakes and take advantage of our strengths.

Many of us have already started to set our goals for the coming year. (and I am not talking about how many pounds we want to lose.) The economic negativity last year made it difficult to predict goals, much less feel confident that you could achieve them. Every news report, every comment just seemed to be static with little pos- itive change from 2009. Then toward the end of the year I started hearing some positive remarks, not giddy excitement, but some business starting to move upward. The nightly news (or internet) reported higher spending for the holidays over the previous year. We had strong participation at Chamber events, even some business being done at our bi-monthly Chamber Breakfast (sponsored by Bay Cities Bank and Lane Business Consulting, shameless plug). There was enthusiasm and I will even say the word ‘excitement’.

I don’t want to get too carried away, but maybe 2011 is the rebound year for business in Land O Lakes/Lutz. If we all look for the op- portunity to use and/or refer business to other Chamber members, we might hear that word more and more.

Before she left us, Sandra Fletcher was doing an outstanding job re- kindling the Women Business Leaders group, with that group grow- ing with each meeting. She believed it was important to help local business women (and men) succeed. Of course, for years Sandra was instrumental at Bay Gulf Credit Union in doing just that.

My personal thanks to Sandra for bringing enthusiasm and excite- ment to the table, and being an outstanding colleague, competitor, and friend.

As we jump into 2011, we each need to look for that opportunity to help each other. Then, by the end of this year, words like enthusi- asm and excitement will be more common place in the Chamber community.
