Structure

The hierarchical structure of the schema tree

Order - element children can be grouped as ordered (Sequence) or un-ordered (All).

Alternative - element children can be grouped as mutually exclusive (Choice).

Multiplicity

Elements can be specified as:

Optional and not repeatable ( 0..1)

Optional and repeatable (0..*)

Mandatory and not repeatable (1)

Mandatory and repeatable (1..*)

Data Type

The data type of an element may be specified.  e.g. date, string, long

New data types may be defined based on a restricted extension to a primitive data type.

Data restrictions

The content of an element may be further restricted:

Facets: e.g. minimum, maximum, length

Patterns: range of values or pattern mask

Enumerations: a list of allowable values

Relative referencing

Elements may be referenced with an identifier allowing simple indexed joins within the XML
