HAZLETON ART LEAGUE NEWSLETTER

www.hazletonsartleague.org

February 2011

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

“Announced by all the trumpets of the sky, Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields, Seems nowhere to alight:…” From The Snow-Storm, Ralph Waldo Emerson

It seems the winter’s snow arrived and doesn’t want to leave! We begin a new year at the Hazleton Art League and look forward to activities that will involve all members, and we look forward to your participation

In this epistle and in the newspaper advertising you will see the line up for the spring classes and we hope that you will find something inviting therein. Our efforts to involve young people in art continue with the decoration of the Art League window, and the downtown activity scheduled for April 1 and 2. There will be art contests for two different ages of young artists, and the top entries and winners will be on exhibition at the League’s gallery, with other art works at various venues in downtown Hazleton. Details are in this newsletter.

Please mark your calendars for June 1, 2011 as that will be the date for our annual dinner which will be held at the Valley Country Club, with Sue Hand as our guest speaker. It should be an exciting evening. More information will follow as the time draws near. Another wine-pairing event is being organized for May. Stay tuned for that sumptuous afternoon.

Trips are being organized to various museums and art exhibitions.

With this newsletter you will find two evening daily number lottery tickets for the month of May, which is one of our fundraisers and I urge you to purchase these tickets yourself or sell them. Please note the deadline for returns. If you need additional tickets, perhaps as gifts, please contact a Board member. These fundraisers continue to be very important for the League, as we struggle to maintain our building and support important programming.

The Board continues to need more involvement from our membership especially to determine the future direction for the League. One way to get involved is to join a Board committee or to join the Board of Governors, which will be elected at our annual meeting.

I look forward to seeing you at the Art League events.

William A. Shergalis, Ph.D., President, HAL Board of Governors
