BRITISH SOCIETY OF GASTROENTEROLOGY

WITHDRAWAL OF GLUTARALDEHYDE

STATEMENT FROM PROF MIKE BRAMBLE

CHAIRMAN ENDOSCOPY COMMITTEE

Members of the Endoscopy Section may have heard through a variety of sources that glutaraldehyde is being withdrawn and I have confirmation from Johnson and Johnson that they are circulating all users and all hospitals in the UK to inform everyone of this development. The date I have been given is that CIDEX will no longer be available after May 1st 2002. Other manufacturers of glutaraldehyde are being contacted but I understand that it is likely that all glutaraldehyde preparations are to be withdrawn. This is so far a provisional statement and will be updated as soon as I have more information.

As a response to this I am reconvening, as a matter of some urgency, the disinfection working party involving members of the endoscopy committee and representatives of the three major endoscope companies. The meeting is scheduled for March 12th and we hope to issue an interim report on the website shortly afterwards and well before May 1st.

Advice at the present time is to wait for the deliberations of the working group, which will issue new guidelines in due course but circulate interim advice after the March 12th meeting. Individual units should also liase with their own microbiologists and infection control departments to prepare for the changes which will inevitably be required as a consequence of this action.

May I just remind members that the manufacturers of glutaraldehyde usually exhibit at the BSG annual meeting, which takes place this year in Birmingham on March 17th-20th. Further information about alternatives to glutaraldehyde can be obtained during the meeting but the advice remains to await the report of the disinfection working party and liase with your endoscope supplier before making any changes to the disinfection process in your unit.
