BIOGRAPHY OF I-CARE DIRECTOR MS. GLORIA MCDONALD, L.B.S.W., M.A.

Ms. McDonald is the director for I-CARE, the statewide program that provides health insurance counseling to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Staff and counselors provide unbiased information so that South Caro- lina beneficiaries can make informed health insurance decisions. About 400 counselors are certified to provide assistance.

Ms. McDonald has served as the SHIP director for 12 years. She served 4 years on the SHIP Steering Committee. She has conducted countless training sessions for new counselors and staff from other human services agencies and countless out- reach events with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Social Security Administration. Prior to taking the SHIP position, Ms. McDonald was employed for 18 years as a case manager with the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

I-CARE HIGHLIGHT

Two initiatives were launched in 2008 through the Aging Disability Resource Centers and Morris College (a historically Black college) of Sumter, SC, to provide consumer education to the public. I-CARE reached thousands of beneficiaries through nu- merous church-sponsored health fairs, where churches provided transportation to the events. Insurance counselors are recog- nized annually for their contributions to the community.
