Behind The Lines,The Wait,The Decisions
By Breck Porter
During the early morning hours of September 1st, Galveston SWAT and Hostage Negoiation teams were called to a home where a man had shot and killed his girlfriend and her daughter, then killed himself.
Having made intial voice contact with the man before he died, officers were in a dilema for hours deciding whether to storm the house at the risk of officers being shot, or holding their position in hopes he would surrender after tear gas has been injected into the house. Not knowing if the shooter was dead or alive, and deciding whether to put officers at risk or wait it out, was a very difficult decision for the com- manders.
After several hours, SWAT entered the house where they found the bodies of the man and the daughter. The body of the girlfriend lay at the foot of the front porch steps during the long wait. Reporters and photographers were re- stricted to observing from the police mobile command center a block from the scene for safety reasons. These are pictures of what goes on benind the lines.
