Calhoun Houston Police Department end of Watch: Friday, October 10, 1975 Age: 34 Tour of Duty: 5 years Badge number: 2414 Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of incident: Friday, October 10, 1975 Suspect info: killed during standoff Officer Richard Calhoun was shot and killed while he and officers attempted to apprehend several prison escapees in a home. One of the escapees fired a gun over a stair- well at the officers, fatally wounding Officer Calhoun. Then, one of the escapees was shot and killed by another escapee, before they were all killed in a fire during the ensuing standoff. Officer Calhoun had served with the Hous- ton Police Department for 5 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
Detective victor R. Wells iii Houston Police Department end of Watch: Thursday, October 2, 1980 Age: 33 Tour of Duty: 12 years Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of incident: Thursday, October 2, 1980 Suspect info: Acquitted Detective Wells was shot and killed while making a traffic stop of a taxi cab. He was in plainclothes driving an unmarked police
vehicle when he stopped the cab. The taxi driver shot him and then fled the scene. Sev- eral citizens followed the taxi and the sus- pect was arrested. In trial the suspect claimed he did not know that Detective Wells was a police officer and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. The man was able to get a second trial and was acquitted of all charges. Detective Wells had been with the agency for 12 years and was survived by his wife and two children.
Officer Reuben Becerra DeLeon Jr. Houston Police Department end of Watch: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 Age: 31 Tour of Duty: 6 years, 8 months Badge number: 6969 Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of incident: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 Weapon Used: Handgun Suspect info: Sentenced to life Officer Reuben B. DeLeon and another of- ficer were off duty at an apartment reserved for officers who worked security for the complex. Officers on patrol in the area also used the apartment to complete paperwork. Someone knocked on the door. When Of- ficer DeLeon opened the door he was shot several times and was killed. The other off duty officer and witnesses saw two men fleeing the scene. Two suspects were later arrested. Investiga- tors determined that the suspects were gang members and knew that police officers used the apartment. The suspects were participat- ing in a gang initiation. The suspect who shot Officer DeLeon was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. Officer DeLeon was survived by his wife and three children. He was buried in the Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Rosen-

Deputy Sheriff Alexander Stevens Downs Jr nueces County Sheriff's Department end of Watch: Sunday, October 16, 1932 Age: 23 Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of incident: Sunday, October 16, 1932 Weapon Used: Handgun Suspect info: Liborio garza Nueces County Deputy Sheriff Alexander S. Downs, Jr., was working at a dance when he confronted Liborio Garza who was in- toxicated and creating a disturbance. Dep- uty Sheriff Downs told Garza to "cut out the racket." As the deputy sheriff walked away Garza shot him and three bystand- ers. Deputy Sheriff Downs was taken to a doctor's home and died a few minutes later. Bystander Francisco Villarreal died and Jose Rodriguez and Andres Garcia were wounded. Liborio Garza pled insanity based on intoxication and smoking marijuana. He was convicted and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Deputy Sheriff Downs was 23 years old and was survived by his wife and infant son.
Police Officer Henry O. Wendell Jr. Pearland Police Department end of Watch: Friday, October 6, 1967 Age: 43 Tour of Duty: 2 months Cause of Death: Struck by vehicle Date of incident: Friday, October 6, 1967
Officer Wendell was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at Main Street and Plum Street following a high school football game. The impact knocked Officer Wendell 85 feet. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with murder by auto. He was sen- tenced to only 6 months probation. Officer Wendell had only served with the agency for 2 months. He was survived by his wife and five children.
Chief of Police Richard Allen Brush Point Comfort Police Department end of Watch: Monday, March 27, 2006 Age: 60 Tour of Duty: 41 years Cause of Death: Heart attack Date of incident: Thursday, March 23, 2006 Chief Richard Brush suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to break up a distur- bance between two neighbors. The two men who were fighting were both city council members. When Chief Brush arrived at the scene he stepped between the two and was able to calm the situation. Shortly after clearing the scene he contacted dispatch and requested EMS to respond to his location. He was transported to a local hospital where he slipped into a coma. He remained on life support for four days until passing away. Chief Brush had served in law enforcement for 41 years. He is survived by his wife.
