“Surf’s Up” For Alumni, 60s Athletes At Homecoming 2001

“Surf’s Up” will be the theme of Homecoming 2001 October 26-27. Reunions are planned for the Classes of 1966, 1976, and 1991, as well as a special reunion for all athletes of the 60s.

The fourth annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner will be held Friday, October 26 in the March F. Riddle Center.

Alumni Speaker Day New this year on Friday will be an Alumni Speaker Day. Many alumni have expressed an interest in speaking to current students about topics as wide-ranging as gaining admission to graduate school, the requirements of their respective professions or careers, and how to land a good job.

MC’s 7,551 graduates represent a variety of wisdom and experience from which current students can benefit. Alumni who would like to participate in Speaker Day are urged to contact Tom Maze at (910) 630-7167 or tmaze@methodist.edu or Lori Bumgarner, director of career services at (910) 630- 7279 lorib@methodist.edu.

Traditional Saturday Events Traditional Saturday events include the William P. Lowdermilk Golf Classic, the Education Alumni Breakfast, the Pre-game Tailgate Party, men’s and women’s alumni basketball games, football game, and soccer games. The dinner and dance will take place on Saturday evening at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux.

The silent auction will also be held Saturday evening. Last year’s inaugural event raised $2,100 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. It’s not too early to donate an item. Donations are tax deductible. Contact the Alumni Office at (910) 630-7167 for more information.

Athletes of the 60s Athletes who played for Methodist in the 60s are being invited to come back and relive their memories with Coaches Schwarz, Clayton, Sykes, and Baum. Mrs. Rubelle H. Shelly (wife of the late Bruce Shelley) will also attend.

If you were an athlete from that era and did not receive a postcard in late May about the reunion, please contact the Alumni Office.

In anticipation of this special reunion, we are publishing the following list of lost athletes: Tom Bell ’69, Larry Moore ’70, Gene Burke ’67, Dave Odenwelder ’69, Richard Brown ’71, Peck Ormond ’69, Richard D’Allessandro ’68, John Powell ’70, Daniel Dopps ’71, Gene Rapelye ’68, Art Demott ’70, Guy
