ENERGY STAR is a label that identifies products, such as office equipment, which meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR help you save energy and money without sacrificing performance. By using less energy, these products also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions— caused by the burning of fossil fuels at power plants—that contribute to global warming.

More than 50 types of products, including office equipment, home electronics, lighting, appliances, and heating and cooling equipment can qualify for the ENERGY STAR.

Because office equipment is in use up to 24 hours a day, energy- efficient features are important for saving energy and are an easy way to help fight global warming.

Computers and Monitors

Computers that have earned the ENERGY STAR use energy efficiently while in standby and sleep modes, as well as when they are in use. They also include a more efficient internal power supply, ensuring energy savings at all times. A computer meeting the ENERGY STAR specification will use 20 – 50 percent less energy, depending on how it is used.

ENERGY STAR qualified monitors must also meet energy efficiency requirements in on, sleep, and off modes. Enabling your monitor’s power management feature and turning it off when not in use saves even more energy and helps it run cooler and last longer before needing to be replaced.

Imaging Equipment

ENERGY STAR qualified imaging equipment refers to printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, and multi-function devices that use less energy than standard products—without sacrificing quality or performance.

Many of these products are on most of the day and use considerable energy. Imaging equipment that has earned the ENERGY STAR is, on average, 25 percent more efficient than standard models. Designed to power down when not in use, these products also run cooler and last longer. Many ENERGY STAR qualified models also have a double-sided printing feature that saves paper.

When buying new office equipment, consider the benefits of ENERGY STAR. Because most office equipment is on for long periods of time, power management features are important to saving energy and money.

ENERGY STAR power management features place monitors and computers (CPU, hard drive, etc.) into a low-power sleep mode after a designated period of inactivity. Activating power management features saves energy, money, and helps protect the environment.

Low-power modes for computers reduce the spinning of the hard disk, which decreases power consumption. Monitors that enter a low-power mode turn off the screen output. Simply hitting a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse awakens the monitor and computer in a matter of seconds.

ENERGY STAR qualified imaging equipment, such as copiers, printers, scanners, and multi-function devices, save energy through more energy-efficient operation and power management features. When not in use, qualified imaging equipment automatically enters low- power mode, reducing energy consumption.


Enable power management features

  • Setting office equipment to automatically power down not only uses less energy, it also helps the equipment last longer and runs cooler, helping you save on room cooling costs, as well.

In addition to power management, you can save more energy with your office equipment by doing the following:

  • Avoid using a screensaver when your computer monitor is not active. Instead, let the monitor switch to sleep mode or turn it off.

  • Unplug battery chargers or power adaptors from wall outlets when equipment is fully charged or when the chargers are not connected to any equipment.

Use a power strip

  • Even when turned off, many office equipment products continue to draw a small amount of electricity. For home office equipment, this standby or “phantom” power load can range from a few watts to as much as 40 watts for each piece of equipment. Turning off the power strip for your computer and all supporting equipment disconnects the power supply from the power source completely, eliminating standby electricity use.

Choose Wisely:

  • A machine that combines functions, like printing, faxing, and scanning, will use less energy than three separate machines.

  • If you’re trying to decide between a desktop and laptop computer, one factor you might want to consider is that laptops use much less energy.
