Ask your local Mitre 10
Garden Centre staff for advice about plants that thrive in your area.
Take a good look at local
gardens that you like. Note plant types, aspect to north, plant health, colour and so on. Take photos if possible. This can help to inform your design, but you’ll learn as you go anyway. The cottage garden is more about the journey than the destination.
Instead of using pots, try
old laundry tubs, coppers, troughs, wheelbarrows, barrels, or any other rustic container for plants.
Encourage insects to the
garden rather than spray insecticides. If the garden is abundant there’ll be plenty to share with small creatures that can be a pleasure in themselves – not to mention their attractiveness to the birds, frogs and lizards that will come to live in your garden to feed and raise young.
Keep thorny plants away
from paths and seats.
Always use gloves
when handling potting mix and fertilisers.
Protect your eyes and ears
when you use power tools. Protect your helpers too.
Some Mitre 10 stores can
refer you to trustworthy local tradespeople.
