Implement Change - Identify specific actions pharmacy leaders and staff should take to implement practice model change including determination of the necessary staff (pharmacy leaders, pharmacists, and technicians) skills and competencies required to implement this model.)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
By describing patient care services and activities that support the safe and effective use of medications, corresponding models can be adopted that optimize the full potential of pharmacist, technician, and technology resources. The initiative and summit is important to inspire passion, commitment, and action among pharmacy leaders to implement and optimize the role of pharmacists as direct patient care providers.
WHAT IS THE PPMI SUMMIT?
The PPMI has three major components:
Invitational Summit in November 2010
Social marketing campaign to promote practice change
Grants to support demonstration projects
Similar to the legendary Hilton Head Conference in 1985, the PPMI Summit brings together thought leaders throughout hospital and health system pharmacy to redefine, reconstruct, and reinvent the practice model in light of health care reform, advances in technology, and the evolving patient care roles of pharmacists.
This invitational consensus conference, held on November 7-9, 2010, in Dallas, Texas, is sponsored by ASHP and the ASHP Foundation. The 100+ ASHP member attendees were selected by a nomination process and represent established pharmacy leaders in diverse practice settings and areas of expertise.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED AS A STUDENT?
As the future pharmacy workforce in training, it is important that students get involved in the initiative! A student leader, the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Chair, Emily Dotter, is representing you at the Summit in an observer role. Students are encouraged to participate by supporting the initiative’s goals and becoming agents of change at the local level.
