Dr. Ellis' background has been in the area of material science with a major emphasis on the mechanical properties of metals. He has been the principal investigator in many fundamental and applied research projects. His experience has included finite element stress analysis, weld/weldment behavior, and remaining service life estimation.

Dr. Ellis is responsible for the metallurgical consulting services with particular emphasis on metallurgical examination techniques and interpretation. In addition, his duties involve an integration of the metallurgical results with those obtained from other sources
NDE, stress analysis, accounting, management, etc. in order to obtain optimal
solutions to customer problems. Technical activities have focused on condition assessment studies, life prediction, failure analyses, and research projects.
ABB COMBUSTION ENGINEERING, INC., 1974 to 1990
Senior Consulting Engineer, Metallurgical and Materials Laboratory.
His work at ABB Combustion has been to investigate the creep and stress rupture properties of pressure vessel and piping structural materials. Time-temperature parametric methods were used to analyze the rupture time, minimum creep rate, time to tertiary creep, and time to a given creep strain data. These correlations are used to set allowable stresses by the ASME Code and to develop creep constitutive equations for finite element stress analysis. He has been involved in (1) research programs to develop long service life transition joints (2) residual creep life studies on carbon steel, low alloy ferritics and several austenitic stainless steels using post exposure rupture testing, (3) remaining life assessment using metallographic methods, and (4) failure analysis for longitudinal seam weldments.
